The monastery was founded by Tsar Fedor Ioannovich in gratitude for delivering Moscow from the attacks of the Crimean Khan Kazy Girei in 1591-1593. It was built at the site where Russian soldiers camped to get ready for the battle and be blessed. Although close to the center of Moscow, once you step within its massive ancient walls you have entered a green oasis of peace and tranquility. The tombs of some of the most historically important Russian families have been preserved in the monastery's rustic cemetery.
